WHY I BUILT THIS

I was an early Airbnb employee. The IPO changed everything. So did the tax bill.

When Airbnb went public, the number next to my name was more than I ever imagined. And honestly? I wasn’t prepared for the tax bill that came with it. The gap between earning it and figuring out how to keep it without selling everything, that’s where the real work began.

I talked to everyone. Financial advisors, accountants, tax strategists, anyone willing to share what was working. It was mind-blowing how much is available if you actually lean in to understand.

Here’s what got me: I worked at Airbnb, and nobody ever said, “Hey, short-term rental hosting could be a tax strategy.” I figured out on my own that I could buy a home in a place I love, renovate it, qualify as a real estate professional, and reduce my taxes significantly. But it’s more than a tax play. It’s an asset I can give my kids one day. It generates income. It pays for itself.

My advisor said it was time to diversify off my Airbnb position. So I did it again, a beach cottage in Marion, in a place we also love. Two properties that pay back for me. Year one is the hardest part, but I was more than willing to deal with that for the tax benefits.

This doesn’t mean I don’t want to pay my fair share. Of course I do. But I want to retain as much wealth as I can for my family. I’m an immigrant, and every dollar matters.

When I started talking to friends about all of this, none of them knew either. We were all struggling with the same things. So I decided to do something about it.

THE STRATEGY IN PRACTICE

These properties are the tax strategies. Guests help pay for them.

I manage both myself, which qualifies me for Real Estate Professional status. Every renovation dollar, every piece of furniture, every appliance works on my tax return. The savings are significant, and guests cover the mortgage.
