Privacy Policy
The short version
Unlevered helps you find tax strategies. To do that, you share personal and financial information with us. We treat that information as sensitive, we encrypt it, we do not sell it, and we only use it to deliver the product to you and to match you with a licensed tax specialist when you ask.
What we collect
- Account info: name, email, and authentication tokens.
- Quiz answers: filing status, income range, state, household details, real estate, equity comp, retirement accounts, and similar tax context.
- Documents you upload: tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, closing disclosures, retirement statements, and other financial records.
- Usage data: pages visited, features used, and error logs so we can keep the product working.
- Messages: anything you send to the strategist chat or your assigned tax specialist.
How we use it
- To generate your estimated savings and personalized strategies.
- To parse your uploaded documents and pre-fill your dashboard.
- To match you with a licensed CPA or EA when you request human help.
- To answer your questions in the strategist chat.
- To improve the product by analyzing aggregated, de-identified usage patterns.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your tax documents or quiz answers to train public AI models.
Sensitive information and documents
Tax documents and financial details are sensitive information. Here is how we handle them:
- Encryption in transit: all uploads and API calls are served over TLS.
- Encryption at rest: documents are stored in Supabase Storage with row-level security, and the underlying storage is encrypted at rest.
- Access controls: only you and the tax specialist assigned to your account can access your documents. Unlevered staff access is logged and restricted to support and security response.
- AI parsing: when you upload a document, we send it to a model provider (such as Anthropic or OpenAI) to extract structured data. The provider processes the document to return the parsed fields and does not retain it for model training.
- Retention: you can delete any uploaded document at any time from the Documents tab. Deleted documents are removed from active storage immediately and purged from backups within 30 days.
- Deletion on request: email support@unlevered.io to delete your account and all associated data.
Cookies and local storage
We use cookies and browser local storage for a few specific purposes:
- Authentication: a secure HTTP-only cookie keeps you signed in.
- Quiz progress: your in-progress quiz answers are saved to your browser local storage (key: unleveredv2_state_v1) so you can resume if you close the tab. This stays on your device unless you sign in and sync it to your account.
- Session and security: short-lived cookies used to protect against cross-site request forgery and to maintain your session.
- Analytics: if enabled, privacy-preserving analytics cookies that measure aggregate usage. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
You can clear cookies and local storage at any time through your browser settings. Clearing them will sign you out and erase any un-saved quiz progress.
Who we share it with
- Service providers: Supabase (database and storage), Netlify (hosting), Anthropic and OpenAI (AI parsing and chat), and email delivery providers. Each is bound by confidentiality and data-protection terms.
- Your tax specialist: if you request human help, we share the minimum information needed with the CPA or EA we match you with.
- Legal compliance: if required by law or to protect rights and safety.
- Never: advertisers, data brokers, or model-training datasets.
Your rights
- Access: request a copy of what we store about you.
- Correction: update anything inaccurate.
- Deletion: delete your account and all associated data.
- Portability: export your dashboard and uploaded documents.
- Opt-out: email us to opt out of analytics or product emails.

Changes to this policy
When we materially change this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, for signed-in users, surface a notice on your dashboard before the change takes effect.
